Kayaking Juniper Springs Run in Ocala National Forest, Florida

Kayaking Juniper Springs Run in Florida

Kayaking Juniper Springs Run in Ocala National Forest is one of the most beautiful paddles I’ve done in the Florida Springs. The stunning 7-mile route winds down crystal-clear waters, lush old growth forest and narrow channels. It offers a chance to see local wildlife like alligators, otters, turtles and birds. This guide explains how to rent a kayak, including the shuttle service, and why kayaking Juniper Springs Run should be added to your Florida itinerary.

Kayaking Juniper Springs Run

The Juniper Springs Recreation Area is a Florida gem. It is conveniently located near cities like Ocala, Daytona Beach, Orlando, and Gainesville, making it an ideal day trip option. The kayaking launch site is within the park, just a short walk from the parking area. Carts are available at the concession stand to help transport kayaks to the launch dock.  A return shuttle service is available to pick up paddlers at the end of the 7-mile run at Juniper Wayside Park. It returns to the Juniper Springs Recreation Area.

However, it’s important to note that kayaking on Juniper Springs Run is NOT suitable for beginners. The route includes several technical areas requiring manoeuvring around and under fallen trees, navigating narrow channels, and a small section of rapids. There are limited opportunities to stop along the banks for a picnic or a rest. However, don’t let this deter you from experiencing this incredibly beautiful paddle. It was one of the most challenging, yet enjoyable kayak runs I’ve done in the Florida Springs.

Can I Rent a Kayak?

Yes, you can rent kayaks from the park’s concession stand, Naventure, or you can launch your own vessel. However, reservations cannot be made in advance, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a kayak.

We took a trip to Ocala and decided to rent kayaks and book a spot on the return shuttle service. We arrived around 10am, and there were still plenty of kayaks available, although it was a chilly day. Upon arrival, we went inside where there were tablets set up for registration, completing a liability waiver, and watching a safety video specifically for kayaking at Juniper Springs.

The cost for a single kayak was $60, while a tandem kayak (for two persons) was $70, plus tax. After registering, we were allocated a shuttle pick-up time based on our launch time. However, if you bring your own vessel, you can also book a spot on the shuttle. You are required to complete a liability waiver, and the shuttle fee is $15 per person.

How Long Does it Take to Kayak Juniper Run?

As mentioned earlier, this run is not suitable for beginners and typically takes around 3 to 5 hours to complete. We consider ourselves intermediate paddlers, and it took us about 4 hours to finish the run at a comfortable pace. We took some time to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings, the crystal-clear waters and spotting wildlife along the way.

How Much Does it Cost to go to Juniper Springs?

We paid $12 plus tax for a day pass into the Juniper Springs Recreation Area. This fee includes access to all on-site amenities, including launching your own vessel. But if you think you’ll visit more often, the Ocala National Forest Springs Hopper Pass is available for $80 + tax per person. It is valid for 12 months and includes several springs in the Ocala area: Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Silver Glen Springs, Clearwater Lake, and Wildcat Lake.

What Should I Bring for Kayaking Juniper Springs?

You should plan to spend around four hours on Juniper Run, so here are some recommended items to bring with you. Make sure to pack plenty of water, food, and snacks in reusable containers. The park conducts random cooler checks at the launch site, so it’s not worth the risk of having items confiscated. Although much of the run is shaded, it’s always a good idea to bring sunscreen. And of course, don’t forget to bring your camera to capture all the beautiful moments along the way.

Remember to Leave No Trace! The Florida Springs have unique habitats, and visitors can take steps to ensure we enjoy and protect them for years to come. Always follow the rules: remain in designated areas when walking or entering the water, dispose of all trash in the provided cans, respect wildlife, and avoid introducing pollutants into the water.

Juniper Springs Recreation Area

Juniper Springs Recreation Area offers a variety of activities including swimming, snorkelling, picnicking, and hiking. Visitors can also explore a historic millhouse and stay at the campsite.

Swimming at Juniper Springs

One of the highlights is the beautiful swimming hole, which is fed by natural springs and maintains a refreshing temperature of 72º F year-round. The area also features picnic and grill facilities, making it an ideal spot to relax and take a dip after paddling Jupiter Run. At the edge of the swimming area is a historic millhouse and water wheel, constructed in 1935 to generate electricity for the area. Although it is no longer in use, it’s a unique site offering a glimpse into the history of Juniper Springs.

Juniper Springs Recreation Area

Hiking at Juniper Springs

Situated within Ocala National Forest, the recreation area provides plenty of hiking opportunities. Among these is the Juniper Springs Nature Trail, a short 0.8-mile boardwalk path to Fern Hammock Springs. For those looking for a more challenging hike, Juniper Springs offers two sections of the Florida Trail: one from Juniper Prairie Wilderness to Hopkins Prairie and the other from Juniper Springs to Farles Prairie. Both hiking options average around 10 miles in length.

Camping at Juniper Springs?

The campsite at Juniper Springs is popular because of its activities, amenities, and shaded sites. There are three loop areas: Fern, Sand, and Trop, each with an average nightly rate of $36. Campsites can be reserved up to 6 months in advance on the Recreation site.

The water here looks absolutely perfect for kayaking. I dislike kayaking when I’m fighting the ocean current. Personally, I like it for relaxing so this looks amazing!

This is a really beautiful area! It’s shaded well but still allows for some sunshine to peek through. At only $12 + tax for a day pass, I’ll definitely have this on my itinerary if I ever visit!

This looks so relaxing and pleasant! We went kayaking on the sea, and it was a little stressful with the waves and watching out for boats – but your photos of Juniper Springs make it look like the opposite experience – what beeeautiful scenery to paddle through! Spending 4 hours there sounds lovely.

Send this to a manatee lover 💙 Manatee season is Send this to a manatee lover 💙

Manatee season is officially in full swing here in Central Florida (mid-November to the end of March). During the winter months, manatees seek refuge in the warmer waters of the Florida Springs. So, if you want to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants, these are 4 popular Florida State Parks they love to visit:

📍Three Sisters Spring in Crystal River (1h 30 from Orlando & Tampa) Head here for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, and boardwalk viewing. Crystal River is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim with manatees.

📍Blue Spring near Deland (45 mins from Orlando & 2hrs from Tampa) This park often sees record numbers - sometimes over 400 manatees in a single day! Watch them swimming and interacting from the network of boardwalks

📍 Silver Springs in Ocala (1h 30 from Orlando & 1h 45 from Tampa) Visit America’s largest spring and explore by glass-bottom boat or paddle down the river at your own pace

📍 Homosassa Springs (1h 40 from Orlando & 1h 10 from Tampa) A great spot to see manatees up close, with riverfront trails and Florida wildlife exhibits to explore

💧 Local tip: cooler temps = more manatees. Aim for early mornings for the best viewing.

⚠️ Remember this is their home, leave no trace

It’s nicknamed “𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘥 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥” because it uses your own platelets to stimulate collagen, improve texture, and naturally boost your skin from within.

This was my first session, and I can’t wait to see the results build after my next one!
